Scanning vibrometry for vibration measurement

Today, I and three my classmates went to Hsinchu. Hsinchu is a city in Taiwan; we visited NTHU (National Tsing Hua University) to attend a vibration seminar.

We started our journey by taking bus from Taipei Main Station, we spent around 1 hour and 45 minutes to get the location.

After arriving in NTHU, we entranced the building directly. At the announcement, there would be a speaker from Germany and that seminar would be presented in English. But, the Germany speaker was not be there so the seminar were totally in Chinese and I didn’t understand anything, therefore (suoyine) I had nothing to do except sleeping while the speaker was explaining the subject.

I could understand a little what the Chinese speaker said, and in this note I would like to tell you about those things I understood. The seminar was about Scanning vibrometry for vibration measurement. Before I started talking about scanning vibrometry, let me remind you how to get the vibration parameters.

As we know, we need to do FRF experiment (Frequency Response Function) to measure the vibration response (displacement, velocity, or acceleration) or to get the natural frequency or mode shape of the structure. Besides that, we can utilize the finite element software to get the results (ANSYS, Femap with NX Nastran, Patran with NX Nastran, or other softwares). Now, we don’t need to do that anymore to get the same result. Moreover, scanning vibration can be used to validate the simulation results in software.

Polytec, one of the companies in vibration measurement, provide the scanning vibration to measure the vibration parameters. The camera will give the laser to several points in the structure, then we can get the result directly after that. We don’t need to put any sensor in the structure. All calculation will be done by light.

I will not tell you in detail because It will be too long. If you want to know more about Vibration measurement, you can find DJ Ewins book with the title “Modal Testing”, or if you want to get the information about scanning vibration, you can visit Polytec company website.

At the end of the seminar, the speaker gave the demonstration how to do scanning vibration using Laser in small component (speaker). After giving the laser, the results came out and finish.
